What does a low voltage contractor do?

Low voltage covers the wiring and systems that run under 50 volts: data and network cabling, security cameras, access control, speakers and audio, intercom, TV distribution, alarm and automation control wiring. In Florida this work is licensed separately from electrical, and a low voltage contractor is who you want running data and A/V cable. An electrician is who you want running power. What is structured cabling?

Structured cabling is the disciplined version of running wire: every outlet is home-run back to one central rack or panel on a documented plan, using a consistent standard of cable, jack and termination, and every run is tested and labeled at both ends. The alternative is daisy-chained, undocumented cable added a job at a time. That works until something fails, at which point nobody can tell which cable goes where. Structured cabling is what makes cameras, Wi-Fi, audio and automation additions cheap later instead of another guessing exercise.

Do I need Cat6 or Cat6A?

Cat6 handles 1 gigabit everywhere and 10 gigabit on shorter runs, and it is the right default for most homes. Cat6A is worth the premium on long runs, on backbone links between racks and floors, in commercial buildings, and anywhere you expect to want 10-gig for the next 15 years. We will spec per-run rather than blanket-upselling the whole house.

How much does structured cabling cost?

Retrofit data drops in a finished home typically run $175 to $400 per drop depending on access and run length. New construction prewire during framing is substantially cheaper per drop and is quoted as a package against the plan set. Rack builds are quoted separately based on equipment count.

Can you run Ethernet in a house with no attic access?

Usually, and it is a routine problem here: flat roofs, concrete tile on trusses with no walkway, and CBS walls that will not take a fish tape. The routes we use instead are soffits, closets stacked between floors, chases beside plumbing, baseboard and crown moulding on the return, and exterior runs in UV-rated conduit brought back in behind the drop. On a two-storey it is often cheaper to feed the upper floor once with a single certified run and put a small switch up there than to pull six cables through a ceiling. We work the route out on the site walk, before quoting.

Can you fix wiring another company installed?

Yes, and it is a large part of what we do. We test what exists, identify what is failing and why, re-terminate or re-pull what needs it, and document the result. In many cases far less needs replacing than homeowners expect, and a technology assessment is the cheapest way to find out which case you are in.

When should low voltage be installed in new construction?

Cable goes in at framing, after mechanical/electrical rough-in and before insulation and drywall. The design conversation should happen well before that, ideally while plans are still being drawn, so device locations and closet space are on the drawings.
